Your library's Christmas Advent programme offers you the opportunity to do so once a week. The story lasts about 15 minutes. Come to our lounge on the ground floor of ITC2 (Building C at Dieter-Görlitz-Platz, 1st entrance on the left).

Dates:

  • Wednesday 11.12.2024, 1.30 pm

Jackets, bags and drinks in the library - we're trying it out!

Dear students,

In the coming semester, we want to relax our library rules a little on a trial basis.
Jackets, bags and all drinks in closed containers will be permitted.
It is still not possible to bring bags to the ECRI.

Please note:

  • Food in the library and drinks in open containers (e.g. cups, cans, disposable ToGo cups) are still not permitted
  • Do not leave valuables unattended
  • No seat reservations with jackets and bags

Please take care to leave the workplace in a tidy condition for the next users.
You are helping to make this test run a success.
We reserve the right to make adjustments.

Here is an initial overview of what is important at the start of the semester:

Training offers:

Visit our training course Basic Library Knowledge and learn everything you need to know about the library. This training is as part of the PLV compulsory for some degree programmes (AI, EM, ET und IAS). There are numerous dates at the beginning of the semester (face-to-face and online).

Alternatively, you can find out more on your own via our homepage.

Create a library account:

A library account is required for borrowing printed media, locker keys and study rooms: Account opening

Media:

Printed media can be retrieved independently from the shelves (if necessary after a prior OPAC search) and borrowed from the self-check-in desk.

Electronic media can be found in the OPAC and can be accessed via VPN or Eduroam.
No library account is required for this, only the university ID for logging into VPN/Eduroam.

Library as a place of learning:

  • Main library
    • Food in the library and drinks in open containers are not permitted.
    • The study rooms (upper floor and basement) in the main library are freely accessible.
  • ECRI
    • Food in the library and drinks in open containers are not permitted. It is also not possible to take bags into the library.
  • ITC2
    • Learning rooms in ITC2 can be reserved in ilearn. A valid library account is required. The rooms are accessible 24/7.

Do you prefer to read your textbooks online? Do you live too far away to borrow books locally?

Then our e-media offer is just right for you. All you need is the  VPN client. You can download it on the intranet under IT services (for mobile phones, PCs or tablets). Log in to the VPN client with your university ID and you have access to all our e-books, e-journals, e-papers and specialised databases (from anywhere and around the clock). A library account is not required to use e-media.

All licenced e-books can be found in OPAC. Tip: select the publication type e-book when narrowing down the search, then no printed books will be displayed.

You can also find e-journals in the OPAC or alternatively via the Deggendorf electronic journal library.

The two e-papers New York Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung can be found under Newspapers & Magazines.

Specialised databases are sorted by subject and can be found under Research & Databases.

Another advantage: you don't need to pay attention to loan periods! However, the terms of use are important:
Conditions regarding downloads or printouts are determined by the provider.

  Use for own, scientific purposes

Passing on content to third parties

 Commercial use

 Systematic download

You can find detailed information on our e-media under E-BooksNewspapers & MagazinesResearch & Databases.

Many of our database providers offer detailed tutorials/webinars (see below). Take advantage of it during your semester break 😊

If you would also like to know how to access essays without full-text access, read here or attend one of our training courses (database/literature research or fit for the bachelor thesis). We also explain how to approach a literature search as strategically as possible.

usage

terms of use

The basis for use is the General Regulations for Use of the Bavarian State Libraries (ABOB in German). Borrowing is only possible with a library card.

In addition, the following guidelines apply:

terms of use for electronic offers (databases, e-books, e-journals)

  • Terms and conditions of those providers, which can be found on their websites, apply

Generally speaking:

  • Conditions regarding downloads and printing are determined by the provider
  • Transfer of content to third parties is not allowed
  • The use is only permitted for own, scientific purposes
  • Systematic download is prohibited

copyright / data protection in electronic offers (databases, e-books, journals)

The use of our electronic offers (e-books, e-journals, databases) is possible within the framework of copyright law.

In addition, the licence agreements of the respective provider apply. The applicable licence conditions can be viewed on our homepage (E-books/Research & Databases) and on the providers' pages.

The electronic offers can be accessed via the library homepage, the OPAC or externally (Google or similar). Access is automatically established via IP check (with VPN connection outside the campus). With most providers, you can recognise by our logo/name that it is a product licensed by us.

You do not have to provide any personal data to access our licensed offers.

However, many providers allow personal registration for further functions (watch lists, bookmarks, saving search queries...). The use of such offers is voluntary. If a person decides to use them, the provider is the person responsible for processing personal data. The providers' data protection information can be viewed on their website. If corresponding offers are not used, this will not result in any disadvantages or restrictions for you in terms of pure access to the electronic offers.

In particular, we would like to point out that when using corresponding additional offers, data may be transferred to a third country whose level of data protection does not correspond to that of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and you may not have all rights and freedoms for the protection of personal data available to you to the same extent.

for students:

1) Fill out the user application and scan the page (as a PDF file), plus a photo of your student ID. The application with the subject "User account" has to be sent to bib-service@th-deg.de at the Deggendorf location, to monika.stoeckl@th-deg.de at the Pfarrkirchen location.
2) Carry out a self-registration via the OPAC (Login → Self-Registration). Only a carefully completed form can be unlocked. For your library account, use your university mail address in any case, if necessary also your private mail address in second place.
3) Choose an introductory course for the library or inform yourself on the library's website about the regulations and procedures regarding the use of the library.

The account is usually activated within 3 days after all documents have been submitted. There is no confirmation. Test the registration yourself via the OPAC after this period.

for staff:

In deviation from the above procedure, the blue chip is required for the registration.

for lecturers and externals:

Please contact bib-leitung@th-deg.de

book loan

Books are borrowed by self-service using your student ID and password.
Make sure there is sufficient clearance at the self-checker. Otherwise, incorrect bookings can occur.
Put max. 5 books at the same time on the marked area and close your account - ideally with the button "finished"! Check your receipt carefully.

Check the condition of the books and show damaged or soiled books and media to the librarian.

Please note the following (ABOB § 8 duty of care and compensation):

(1) The users have to treat the works carefully and protect them from damage. Entries of any kind, such as painting and reporting of errors, as well as the turning over of page corners, are considered to be damage.

(2) The user must check the condition of each item upon receipt and report any damage immediately. If they choose not to do this, it is assumed that the work has been borrowed in an undamaged condition.

A maximum of 32 books can be borrowed.

returns

You can return your books at the counter during opening hours.

Outside opening hours, returns can be put in the returns box (entrance area of the library). It closes automatically as soon as it is full. The books will be returned on the next opening day.

The books must be returned on the deadline day at the latest.

orders from the stockroom

You can order books and journals from ITC2 stockroom via the OPAC. Books will be available for collection from the main library on the next opening day from 1pm. Journal volumes are available in main library and can be copied or read on site.
The orders are ready within 5 working days.

loan extension or renewal

Any book from the DIT library that is not pre-ordered or on special loan can be extended up to two times for the same period. The extension can be carried out via your OPAC user account or on the self-checkout. An extension application by email is not possible.
Special regulations apply to the extension of interlibrary loan books.

reservations

A reservation can be made via the OPAC for books currently on loan.
These books will be kept at the counter for a week after they have been returned. If the new user has saved an email address in their user account, they will receive a notification about the availability of the desired title.

If corresponding offers are not used, this will not result in any disadvantages or restrictions for you in terms of pure access to the electronic offers.

In particular, we would like to point out that when using corresponding additional offers, data may be transferred to a third country whose level of data protection does not correspond to that of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and you may not have all rights and freedoms for the protection of personal data available to you to the same extent.

interlibrary loan

Literature that isn't available from the DIT library can be borrowed from another library.

The DIT library is networked with other German libraries, regulations can be read here: Leihverkehrsordnung (LVO) vom 19.09.2003 (Fassung vom 10.10.2008).

how interlibrary loan works

You can order books as well as book chapters or articles from journals.

Your online account will allow you to borrow 7 items simultaneously, although the maximum number of interlibrary books is capped at 12.

Further orders are possible as soon as orders have arrived.

The follwing items not available for interlibrary lending are::

  • Items available at in the DIT library
  • Items that can bought for a low price, less than 15 Euros
  • Papers and magazines
  • Bachelor dissertations from other universities
  • Books and media for hobbies and pastimes, which can be found in Deggendorf public library

fees

Generally free, except orders for items from another country:

  • 1 - 40 pages  1,50 Euros
  • 41 - 60 pages > 6 Euros
  • 61 - 80 pages > 8 Euros
  • Further 20 pages > additional 2 Euros

how to borrow a book from the interlibrary service

Please check each title before ordering at the OPAC. Only literature that is not available in the DIT library can be lent.
The order is placed through the OPAC: Interlibrary loan - how to order

delivery times

If you have saved your email address in the library account, you will receive a notification when an interlibrary loan arrives. Delivery usually takes 4-5 working days, for articles 1-3 days. The items are ready for collection at the counter by the loan period.
All conditions of use are determined by the owning library and can be very different. They can be found in the data medium inside the book.

loan extension

  • Via the DIT librarian
  • Please send a mail to bib-service@th-deg.de, at least 3 days before the end of the loan period
  • You will only receive mail feedback if your request is turned down
  • You can find a new loan period in your user account (via OPAC or self-booking)
  • Please note that interlibrary loan services are subject to reservation, i.e. users are required to return them as soon as a book is reclaimed from the owning library

returns

  • The end of the loan period is on the data carrier and can be viewed in the user account (via OPAC or self-booking)
  • If your email address is stored in the account, you will be reminded of the return date about 3 days prior to the deadline
  • Please keep in mind that the loan period must also be observed if an application for extension is rejected
  • The interlibrary loan books come with a data carrier with all the important information that should be returned with  it. Otherwise a fee of € 5 is charged

literature management Programme

Literature management programmes help to collect and manage literature and information. Citations and bibliographies can be created without much effort.
It makes sense to start using them at the beginning of your studies, as the programmes can also be helpful when writing term papers. For the Bachelor's thesis at the latest, you should no longer do without them.

A licence for Citavi is available at the university. We offer training and a tutorial for it.
However, we also present the free open source programme Zotero as an alternative.

The University Library of the Technical University of Munich offers a detailed comparison of current literature management programmes.

CITAVI

Citavi is available to all university members free of charge. It can be used with Windows. For Mac users, a virtualisation solution is required.

Citavi-Web is not available at DIT. The DSGVO check required for this, has not yet been completed. We will inform you in due course via this website and by e-mail.

Citavi for Mac/Linux:

Citavi is Windows-based, a virtualisation solution is required for Mac (e.g. Parallels or VMware Fusion). Students with Macs also have the option of using ten PCs from the "Student VDI" pool via the VMHorizon Client, on which Citavi 6 can be used from home: https://intranet.th-deg.de/corona-stud/citavi.

zotero

Zotero is a free (up to 300 MB disk space) open source programme that can be used with Windows, MacOS and Linux operating systems.
We do not currently offer training on Zotero, but can recommend the following materials for familiarisation:

- Zotero download
- Documentation Zotero
- Video Neu-Ulm University Library (Timo Guther) CC-BY

open science

GENERAL INFORMATION

Open science is about opening up scientific research, communication, teaching and learning processes to greater exchange, transparency, legal security, reusability and reproducibility. It thus enables reliable and good scientific practice and faster and globally accessible dissemination of research results. Open science includes open access, open education, open data, open source software, open hardware and open methodology.

The university and university library are involved in many of these areas. The Statutes for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice and Dealing with Scientific Misconduct at Deggendorf Institute of Technology regulate aspects such as open source software and open data. Similarly, in the context of research projects, regulations as to whether and how third parties are granted access to research data should be laid down and, if possible and reasonable, self-programmed software should be made accessible along with the source code (Section 14). The Open Access Policy of Deggendorf Institute of Technology provides recommendations for the secondary publication and archiving of publications and for applying for funding to reimburse the costs for publication in open access journals.

COUNSELLING

Do you have any questions about open science? The library management (bib-leitung@th-deg.de) and the university's Open Access Officer can help you if you have any questions about open access. Dr. Seffer (kristin.seffer@th-deg.de) and Ms. Kling (karin.kling@th-deg.de) can help you with open data and research data management. The other aspects of open science are also gradually being expanded, so the Digital Teaching team can be contacted about open educational resources.

For further information and national counselling services, also visit:

RESEARCH

By open access publications

Nowadays, results can be filtered by open access in almost all subject-specific databases (e.g. Web of Science, IEEE Xplore).

                 By Open Data datasets

Also see https://forschungsdaten.info/fr/themen/finden-und-nachnutzen/forschungsdaten-finden/ for further search options.

By open educational resources

Open Educational Resources (OER) can include a wide variety of resources, from images, PowerPoint presentations, videos, textbooks and assignment books to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). One of the most important search engines for universities is the Open Educational Resources Search Index (OERSI).

Image sources for lectures or courses are often found via Wikimedia Commons or Google Image Search (search filter usage rights: "Creative Commons licences"). Also see https://open-educational-resources.de/materialien/oer-verzeichnisse-und-services/ for further search options.

By open source software

The website https://osssoftware.org/ lists open source alternatives to popular programmes and usage scenarios. The Open Source Observatory (OSOR) is also an information source for researchers and university administrative organisations who want to use open source solutions. Open source code can also be found on platforms such as GitHub or SourceForge.

By open hardware

With the OHO Search Engine, the Open Hardware Observatory offers a search engine that specialises in Open Hardware and Do it Yourself projects. You can also explore many projects in the Open Hardware Repository.

With the Open Lab Starter Kit, you can create open source hardware and machines at low cost.

COSTS

The financing responsibility shifts in the case of open access: while in the case of closed access, readers or the library purchase the journal, issue or book, with open access, access to the publication is unrestricted and free of charge. Many publishers are therefore shifting their revenue side towards publication charges and related Open Access Article Processing Charges (APC) or Book Processing Charges (BPC). Therefore, please make sure before publishing that you can finance this cost or that this cost can be absorbed (see Form: Application for the assumption of charges for open access publications. Contact person is Dr. Seffer (kristin.seffer@th-deg.de); please note that cost absorption does not take place automatically and every time an application is submitted).

Exceptions to this are so-called Diamond Open Access publishers and journals without BPC or APC. As a rule, these are run or financed non-commercially by professional societies, universities or libraries, which is why they are not dependent on large monetary incomes. Such Diamond Open Access journals without publication charges can be searched via the following sources:

Any research funded by the European Commission can also be published without APC in Open Research Europe.

When you publish in closed access, you sometimes have the option of free open access Secondary publication.

Finding suitable open access journals

There are various support platforms and journal recommenders to facilitate the search for suitable journals. Please note that all open access business forms, and not just Diamond Open Access, have been listed here. Check the cost situation accordingly:

Two APC-free (see Costs) Diamond Open Access journals hosted at the university are the Bavarian Journal of Applied Sciences and the Journal of Applied Interdisciplinary Research.

Identifying predatory publishers

In order to find the right journal for an open access publication, you should check the journal in advance for reliability (also see Think. Check. Submit) or use white lists such as the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). There are so-called pseudo-publishers/predatory publishers (Predatory publishers) who promise rapid publication but offer no or inadequate quality assurance (peer review).

The following points should be considered positive for a newly published scientific journal: an established publisher, an affiliation with a professional society, verifiable evidence in relevant databases, an official journal impact factor, the use of persistent identifiers (ISSN, DOI), transparent policies for the long-term archiving of publications and research data, renowned editors and editorial team, and established and serious peer review procedures with expert reviewers.

In addition to the lack of the above, the following points are also considered negative: self-calculated or imaginary impact factors, the false indication of indexing in subject-specific databases under Abstracting and Indexing Services, the publisher's registered office at accommodation addresses or addresses in Asia that cannot be verified via Google Maps, and the use of spam e-mails and mass invitations to publish.

Sage

University publishers can publish as Corresponding Authors in all hybrid journals in the package (title list) in open access free of charge and without restriction as part of the SAGE Premier contract package. The following article types are authorised: original research papers, review papers, brief communications, short reports, case reports.

Your affiliation will be recognised via the Sage portal and you will receive an e-mail from the publisher with a link to confirm the open access option. Please note the time frame stated in the e-mail, after which the free open access option may be cancelled. You can find more information here: https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-access-agreements-at-sage/germany

Secondary publication

In the open access context, a secondary publication is the freely accessible publication of a scientific work that appears before, simultaneously with or after the publisher's version. This practice, also known as "green open access" or the "green route", refers on the one hand to the publication of preprints in subject-specific repositories such as arXiv bioRxiv or medRxiv, and on the other to the subsequent free access to closed access publications.

Certain conditions must be observed in the case of secondary publication. The self-archiving policy of the respective publisher must be observed; see Sherpa Romeo as a possible research platform. For example, secondary publications may often only be in the form of a preprint or postprint, and not in the version published by the publisher (VoR). Often, embargo periods must also be observed, i.e., a secondary publication may only take place after a certain period of time has elapsed since publication by the publisher. A reference must always be made to the original publication; publishers sometimes stipulate certain details or provide sample sentences, for example:

"This is the pre-peer reviewed version of the following article: [FULL CITE], which has been published in final form at [Link to final article using the DOI]. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with the Publisher’s Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived Versions."

As a rule, secondary publication may take place on appropriate platforms such as institutional or subject-specific repositories. Often, publication on personal websites of the teaching unit or institution is also permitted. Many publishers, however, do not allow distribution in commercial academic networks (e.g., ResearchGate, academia.edu).

You can use the Dissemin service if you want a secondary publication of several or all of your publications.

Open access policies of third-party funders

The Sherpa Juliet platform provides an overview of the open access policies (mandatory or recommended rules or guidelines) of all third-party funders.

In all EU-funded projects in particular, open access to published project publications (e.g., by using Open Research Europe) and organised research data management are mandatory.

Data Management Plan

A data management plan (DMP) documents the entire life cycle envisaged for the data. This means that it describes how the research data is handled from the planning of its collection to the publication, long-term archiving or, if necessary, scheduled deletion of unpublished data. It answers at least the following questions:

  • What data is collected?
  • Which bodies must be consulted before data collection?
  • In what form and where is the data backed up in the various project phases?
  • Who has access to the data and when?
  • Who is responsible for the individual steps?
  • What legal guidelines must be observed?
  • Will the data be made available to others and if so, how?

The video https://youtu.be/fMxhFRAul80 and https://forschungsdaten.info/ provide a general introduction to research data management (RDM) and DMPs. There are also various software tools that support the creation of a DMP, such as DMPonline or DMPTool.

Publishing and archiving data

Research data can either be published in data journals or, especially in the case of larger datasets, in online repositories and thus generally also archived for the long term. The re3data platform provides an overview of existing repositories. In addition to subject-specific repositories, there are also generic research data repositories. The most widely known ones are Zenodo, Dryad, Figshare and OSF.

For local data, you can of course also use your network drives or the additional IT services of the university.

FAIR data

Published research data should be FAIR. The acronym FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The GO FAIR Initiative has created a comprehensive framework for these FAIR principles.

Many third-party funders, above all the DFG and the EU, call on researchers to publish their datasets in accordance with the FAIR principles wherever possible.

Legal Aspects

Open educational resources refer to freely accessible teaching and educational material. The most important thing here is to use an open licence such as a Creative Commons licence (preferably CC BY). However, especially when using third-party content (e.g., images), make sure that you have the necessary licensing rights and that different licence types can actually be combined. A wealth of information on finding and creating open educational resources can be found at https://open-educational-resources.de/.

Publishing Oers

Depending on the type of open educational resource, you can publish it on iLearn, on OPEN vhb of the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern or its OER repository or on an OER repository such as OER Commons. Generic repositories such as Zenodo, Dryad, Figshare and OSF also generally support document types such as presentation, lesson, video and their publication.

You can apply for financial support to create an open course for OPEN vhb, see https://www.vhb.org/lehrende/kurse/foerderung/ and its sub-pages on the funding rounds

Legal Aspects

Software whose source code is open (i.e., can be viewed, modified and used free of charge) and is provided with an open licence is called open source. There are various open source licences: here are the most important licences and a selection guide. The licences differ, among other things, in Copyleft. This clause is responsible for ensuring that extensions to open software are also open.

Publishing the source code

Git, GitHub, GitLab, SourceForge and similar platforms can be used for publishing and version control of code for open source software, see for example https://mygit.th-deg.de/explore/projects.

Definition and legal aspects

Open hardware is a collective term for construction plans (e.g., design files, installation instructions, blueprints, exploded views) that are designed, published and licensed for reuse and, ideally, provide readily available components. The Open Source Hardware Association has established various criteria that open hardware should fulfil, for example technology neutrality. As with open source software, it is important to include an open hardware licence with the publication, such as the CERN Open Hardware Licence.

Publishing open hardware files

In addition to source code platforms, you can use the generic open hardware repository or specific repositories depending on the type of open hardware, such as Thingiverse for 3D-print files, to publish open hardware files. Individual open hardware journals have also been founded in recent years and offer the possibility of publishing files and an accompanying article.
