What would a kitchen counter look like to you that is also a work surface, dining table and sink? What would be your ideas to be able to use a pram for longer? And what would you improve about a porta-potty? Students of Technical Design degree course have already found answers to all these questions. If your inventive spirit has now also kicked in, you can look forward to the third semester of the Bachelor's degree programme. Because this is exactly where these practical projects are dealt with. With creativity and technical understanding, you learn to think about products in a new way. The goal is to make them more economical, user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing for the customer from a design, technical and functional perspective. Your ideas can make the difference. Your expertise can also be in demand on the international job market. Therefore, some of the courses are offered in English.

Career Prospects

The course is located at the intersection of mechanical engineering and industrial design. As a Bachelor of Technical Design you will study the best of both worlds and drive the development of industrial products both from a technical and artistic point of view. In your job, you will interact closely with other disciplines as part of a team. As a designer, you think in terms of comprehensive product concepts and interact closely with customers.

The Technical Design course is offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics. In contrast to courses of study at other Bavarian universities, it is much more technically oriented. Accordingly, your degree is also a Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.).

From the field of engineering, competences are imparted which form the basis of technical product development. This includes mathematics, mechanics, design, materials engineering and production engineering.

In the area of creative design you will learn the basics of perception and design as well as the necessary art historical and cultural backgrounds. You will also gain insight into the diverse methods and materials available for the design of industrial products. Basic knowledge in business administration and brand management rounds off your range of skills.

Your studies develop from teaching theoretical basics in the first semesters to specific topics and the application or practice of acquired competences in the following semesters. Project work plays a central role in this. Here you will experience the diversity and complexity of a development process live and learn to master it. Some of the courses are offered in English, which underlines the intercultural orientation of the program and increases your attractiveness as a Bachelor of Engineering on the job market.

Occupational fields:

  • Product development (product conception, product design, product development (product conception, product design, construction) with manufacturers of investment and consumer goods)
  • Product designer as service provider for companies in the design office or as freelance engineer
