On 11 March 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Day of Research was held online for the second time.
Daniel Schäffer from the TC for Sensor Technology in Teisnach, the winner of the Best Presentation Award in 2020, kicked things off with his keynote speech on "Integrated optics in glass". Afterwards, eleven selected young researchers faced the challenge of presenting their research projects in no more than three minutes and such that even non-specialists were able to understand what they are working on.
And like every year, the topics were extremely diverse. In detail, the presentations were about the miniaturisation of an optical surface wave spectrometer, the optimisation analysis of biological power-to-methane with simulation, a manufacturing process for making glass sculptures, hybrid manufacturing concepts for large-volume tools with intelligent temperature control, quality-based dynamic pricing, the direct charging of electric vehicles from PV systems with the possibility of energy decoupling into the public power grid, optimised charging planning of electric vehicle fleets, two-dimensional wavefront measurement of high dynamics and low measurement uncertainty, a passive service HUB, real-time signal processing algorithms for interactive music analysis applications and the appreciative exchange of experience online - risk assessment of mental stress according to the German Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The race for the coveted glass trophy, the Best Presentation Award, was won by Peter Meier from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Media Technology. His musically illustrated presentation on „Real-Time Signal Processing Algorithms for Interactive Music Analysis Applications“ earned him a lot of enthusiasm! Peter Meier is doing his doctorate as a member of the digitization collegium of the Bavarian Science Forum BayWISS. At the DIT, his doctoral project is supervised by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Krump, Faculty of Electrical and Media Engineering, and at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg by Prof. Dr. Meinard Müller, Chair of Semantic Audio Signal Processing.
In the Best Poster Competition, Peter Meier (Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Media Technology), Jasmin Weber (Faculty of Applied Health Sciences) and Andreas Federl & Markus Böhmisch (Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Media Technology) won three generous vouchers from Bücher Pustet for their great posters. This year, the posters were once again designed along the principle "One picture, one sentence". All 19 posters about current research projects can still be viewed and downloaded in PDF format and are also available in a flip page version.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Grzemba, Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, congratulated Dr. Melanie Hazod, Dr. Monica Ciolacu, Dr. Stefan Küspert, Dr. Franz Xaver Röhrl and Dr. Michael Kozak on their doctorates, completed in 2020.
After that, Prof. Grzemba honoured the best and highest-ranking publications from the previous year. In the category "Best Scientific Publication by a Senior Researcher", Prof. Dr. Katerina Volchek (European Campus Rottal-Inn) received an award for her article in the International Journal of Information Management. The award in the category "Best Scientific Publication by a Junior Researcher" went to Johannes Käsbauer (TC Parsberg/Lupburg) for his publication in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. In the category "Best Contributions in Conference Proceedings 2020" there were two honours for junior researchers this time: Firstly, Andreas Scharl, Felix Sepaintner and Franz Xaver Röhrl (IPH Teisnach) for their contribution to the conference proceedings of the 50th European Microwave Conference (EuMC) and secondly, Lisa-Marie Hanninger and Jessica Laxa (TC Grafenau) for their publication in the conference proceedings of the 33rd BLED eConference.
The aim of the event series is to provide an insight into the research landscape at DIT with its four main research areas. Young researchers in particular present current research projects in the form of short presentations and posters.
The best presentation receives the Best Presentation Award by audience vote. The trophy was designed by the design class at the Zwiesel Glass College and produced in the educational institution's own manufactory.
