Dr. Martin Gerdes is an Associate Professor of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) specializing in e-Health at the University of Agder in Norway. His academic journey began with a Diploma in General Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. With over 15 years of experience as a researcher in the telecommunications industry, he brings a wealth of applied industrial knowledge to his academic pursuits.
Driven by a passion for integrating technology and healthcare, Dr. Gerdes returned to academia to earn his Ph.D. in ICT with a focus on telehealth and telecare solutions at the University of Agder. His interdisciplinary research addresses the design and application of digital technologies—including information technology, computer systems, human-computer interaction design, and artificial intelligence—in the healthcare domain. His overarching goal is to develop accessible, safe, user-friendly, interoperable, and efficient digital health solutions that cater to the diverse needs and preferences of patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
Dr. Gerdes's research interests are expansive and impactful. He delves into distributed health information system architectures within the discipline of Health and Bio-Informatics, explores personalized decision support and recommendations based on health and wellness monitoring using artificial intelligence (Pervasive Health), and advocates for user-centered design methodologies in global and universal e-Health. His expertise has led to collaborations with international research institutions, including the Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University in Australia, Auckland Technical University in New Zealand, the University of Oslo in Norway, Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK, Amrita University in India, and Luleå Technical University in Sweden.
An active participant in both national and European research projects, Dr. Gerdes has contributed to initiatives on telehealth, mobile health, global health, and the digital management and mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic. His collaborations extend to health institutions like the South Norway Regional Hospital and rural clinics in South Africa and India, underscoring his commitment to improving healthcare access and quality worldwide.
With a unique blend of industrial experience and academic expertise, Dr. Martin Gerdes continues to push the boundaries of how digital technologies can transform healthcare.
